Welcome to the Hamburg Anti-Discrimination Office! With us, you’ll find a place for advice, help and support if you’re experiencing discrimination because of your (perceived) origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability or chronic illness. Our work is confidential, free of charge and our team of advisors all have first-hand experience of various forms of discrimination, we’re on your side!
What does the anti-discrimination advisory service offer?
- We offer a safe space where you can report discrimination and talk about your experiences of discrimination.
- We offer individual advice, develop strategies to help you defend yourself against discrimination or deal with discrimination and support you in implementing these.
- We can write letters of complaint on your behalf, accompany you to the responsible authorities and support you in mediation talks.
- We will inform you about your rights. In cooperation with lawyers, we will give you an initial legal assessment of your situation.
- Advice centres, community organisations and supporters can come to us with questions or arrange an appointment for anyone who needs advice.
- We can attend information events for those affected or training courses for multipliers in advice centres, organisations, schools and communities.
- We offer empowerment workshops.
How do we work?
- Confidentially: Everything we talk about during the consultation remains confidential unless you want us to take action.
- Independently: We are a non-profit association supported by public funding. Together with you, we take a look at whether and how you want to defend yourself and what needs to change. But it’s up to you how to proceed.
- Sensitive to discrimination: We make sure we understand and take into account your life situation and the consequences of social inequality and power relations.
- Qualified: We work in accordance with the quality standards of the Anti-Discrimination Association Germany (ADVD).
- Free of charge
- Multilingual: Our counsellors speak Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, German and English. Interpreters for other languages and also for German Sign Language (DGS) can be provided upon request
- Accessible: Our premises are step-free and accessible by lift. The toilet is wheelchair accessible. Assistance dogs are welcome. German Sign Language interpreters can be provided if required. If you have any other accessability needs, please get in touch and we’ll try to find a solution together.
